In April/May 2020, I spontaneously posted* this series of recordings as a small gesture towards the universal struggle for quarantine wellness. These instant compositions use various combinations of very specific stereo/binaural frequencies** in conjunction with traditional and experimental meditation instruments and techniques… then passed through my lens.

The experience of listening to these is very different from the live, in person, sound bath meditations that I do on a regular basis, which have a vibratory, physical element that is impossible to re-create in an online format. However, these recordings (along with the IMPORTANT addition of headphones) also offer a specific opportunity to explore entraining the brain towards states akin to relaxation, dream and sleep. The recordings use the technique of pairing specific frequencies, and then panning left and right, in order to create binaural beats. I’ve worked with Hong Kong Arts Centre to produce a video which, in part, describes these techniques and explains the typical response of the brain. The video is only a few minutes long, so if you’re interested in learning more, please watch.

Though they are intended to be meditative in nature, these recordings have been specifically made without any guided instruction, with the hope they will work on different levels for different people. It’s not important to understand the techniques, nor is it important to be an experienced meditator—you only need to listen.

*In the spirit of this current moment, these posts are live and unedited—stereo mixes captured direct from the board. They are posted here for free for the upcoming time, with the idea that they will be properly mixed and compiled into a longer-form album later on.

Support the project

If you find this sound meditation project beneficial, please share the link to this page through your social media channels, or directly to friends. If you are fortunate enough to be in a position to support the further production and mixing, please consider a financial contribution via the button above. Certain contributions (listed in the pulldown menu) will be reciprocated with gifts, including future music downloads or a limited print in the lineage of the improvisational mantric score from Hong Kong Solos and the double-layered fabric from Coming In Going Out Coming Out Going In—both of which are still available here.

This current moment is difficult for all of us—every bit of support for independent artists is greatly appreciated!

with love and thanks,
